One of the first games available on the new iPhone App Store is Pool by Posimotion. Graphically it certainly looks the part on the demo screen available in the App Store description and it's £3.49 price makes it an easy impulse buy. So how does it hold up after install?
Startup is nice and speedy and the interface is simple and clear, presenting you with several game types which are accompanied by a decent set of instructions to get you started. Game mechanics are good, the controls are easy to use and well suited to the iPhone. Sound effects, while a little sparse, are realistic enough and they can be disabled if you prefer. Your current game is stored should you switch to another application, and can be resumed once you come back, this simple feature is missing on many early iPhone games but should be considered a necessity, what happens when you are two points away from a high score and a call comes in? Full marks to PosMotion here.
The AI in the single player game is a little dim, you never feel like you are playing against another human player and slightly dissappointingly the game doesn't follow the genuine pool rules, but they have probably been simplified to make the game more accessible for a quick blast every now and again. So, to round up, if you are looking for a faithful Pool simulation then this isn't for you, but it's a decent game to while away a couple of stops on the train and at £3.49 it's not going to break the bank.
