With all the attention seemingly on the upcoming 3G iPhone we thought we would highlight some of the features making it in to the new firmware version for all the current 2.5G iPhones out there. We've split them into likely and less likely...

Likely

  • Exchange support
It's in the beta and Apple announced it would be included, so this is a sure thing.
  • App store
Again announced by Apple already, it's going to be the only official route to installing 3rd party applications.
  • Saving of web and email images
This one looks like a safe bet, holding down your finger on an image for a couple of seconds will bring up a dialog to allow you to save it into a photo album.
  • Separate contacts application
This is already in the new firmware.
  • Updated safari
The beta versions of the firmware include an updated version of webkit, which is responsible for rendering the pages. An increase in Javascript execution speed is rumoured.
  • Contact search
Scrolling up and down a long list of contacts is a pain, no matter how swishy the animation.
  • .Mac push email
It seems likely that .Mac mail accounts with support push email, settings for this have been noticed in the beta firmware releases.

Less Likely

  • iTunes remote control
Information on this one is a bit scarce, but the SDK seems to reveal some hooks to allow connection to an iTunes installation on a host PC, hooks do not mean an application is ready for release though.
  • iChat
This is something long over due, we need an IM client! Recent rumours have indicated that XMPP/Jabber hooks are present within Apple's private framework, ie. not available for 3rd party developers. With AOL already showing a demo version of AIM we are expecting an IM solution will be available, although maybe not built in to the firmware.
  • .Mac syncing
The total evidence for this seems to be a single string contained within the SDK
Syncing with this Dot Mac account will turn off syncing for other Dot Mac accounts and delete any existing synced data.
  • Enhanced Bluetooth support
Connection to external Bluetooth devices could be improved, with connections to GPS units or even audio devices over A2DP links possibly on the cards.
